About

We bring advanced technology to familiar kitchen tools making it easier for busy kitchens to adapt to change.

COMPANY  ▬▬

We help restaurants thrive

It’s human nature to adapt our everyday tools to meet our evolving needs. We believe in building tools with real-life impact — which means designing around people and for people. Hyphen is the next logical step for busy kitchens: an enhanced, flexible, yet industrial-grade makeline built for the 21st century.

As the restaurant experience continues to shift, we see myriad ways to build more efficient kitchens, more dynamic teams, and better ordering processes.

The success of your restaurant can be made or broken based on how well your kitchen runs.  With the right technology, kitchen staff can worry less about staying on track and focus more on producing quality food while streamlining orders and operations.

We see Hyphen as a tool that will unlock possibilities for restauranteurs — allowing them to focus on the intangible ingredients of success: hospitality, customer satisfaction, and culinary ingenuity.

Stephen Klein
CO-FOUNDER & CEO

Stephen was an early operator at Instacart where he launched, scaled, and managed new markets across the country. In 2016 he served as the VP of Operations at Café X, a robotic coffee bar company, where he got Café X approved as the first robotic restaurant in the state of California.

Daniel Fukuba
CO-FOUNDER & CTO

Daniel served as the engineering manager at L2F, a robotic automation integrator, where he oversaw the engineering and commissioning of factory robotics and automation for SpaceX, Tesla, Applied Materials, and Blommer Chocolate.

Derek Pietz
VP, AUTOMATION

Derek was most recently the Head of Automation for Sweetgreen, a fast-growing restaurant chain. Before his role at Sweetgreen, he co-founded L2F, a robotic automation integrator that was acquired by Middleby, America’s largest commercial kitchen equipment provider. When Derek was at L2F he did work for Apple, Zume Pizza, Café X, Tesla, and SpaceX.

Joey Weinmann
VP, OPERATIONS

Joey was an early executive at SpaceX where he managed advanced manufacturing and production steering. After SpaceX, Joey became the Head of Manufacturing & Ops at an AgTech startup where he built and maintained hydroponic TerraFarms. Most recently, he was the VP of Ops at Singer Vehicle Design.

Mark Manfrey
SENIOR PRODUCT DESIGNER

Mark went to school for Industrial Design, but began his career in cinematic visual effects — doing work for The Matrix and Shrek before turning to product design. He led design innovation at Apple’s Special Projects Group and most recently did design work for Facebook’s Workplace.

Abram Simon
DIRECTOR, SOFTWARE ENGINEERING

Abram’s past life runs parallel with Hyphen’s. He started out as a software engineer, but traded his keyboard for a kitchen, and started a restaurant called House of Joe. After a few years in the humbling restaurant industry, he went back to software and did work for NASA. Since then, he’s built engineering teams in IoT at companies such as Samsara and an ag-tech company called Granular.

Lucy Voigt
DIRECTOR, CULINARY INNOVATION

Lucy has been in the foodservice industry for nearly a decade, working as a director for a Los Angeles based restaurant group called All’Acqua. After that she led sales and ops at Moon Juice, creating an elevated customer experience and scaling that to a national audience. Before Hyphen, Lucy was an early team member at Ono Food Co., where she helped introduce a first of its kind robotic food truck to the world.

Carter Branch
DIRECTOR, PARTNERSHIPS

Carter was an early team member at Tapingo (Acq. by GrubHub) where he scaled user acquisition on 100+ campuses, he then helped Happy Returns (Acq. PayPal) build their physical location network from dozens to hundreds. Before Hyphen, he was leading growth projects at Sweetgreen focused on enterprise partnerships, new revenue opportunities, and testing new kitchen formats.

Jordan Buettner
DIRECTOR, STRATEGY & OPERATIONS

Jordan spent a number of years at Uber where he held multiple roles in both product and operations. Being drawn toward new innovation, he joined Uber’s early New Mobilities product team, helping scale market growth and expansion for bike and scooter share products. Most recently, Jordan led research + development projects for Sweetgreen — leveraging technology to improve restaurant operations and customer experience.

Hyphen is the brainchild of a team of serial food tech entrepreneurs and creative restaurant experts.
